Writing Club Wednesday: "BUY ME" Buzzwords

Happy Summer, Everyone!

So with all the incredible options out there for summer reads, it can be hard to choose which titles you simply MUST spend your hard-earned money on. If you're anything like me, you revel in seeing those gorgeous, shiny covers lined up on your book shelf, and regularly have to talk yourself *out* of book-buying binges.

Which got me thinking - what is it about the books you buy that makes you do so?

Here, for example, are some of the
titles I begged people to add to my TBR for
my birthday.
I know when I'm browsing on Amazon, there are certain buzzwords that break me down almost. Every. Single. Time.

Romantic/Sexy

Honestly, it can be either/or, but get both of these words together with a synopsis that gets me to sit up straighter in my chair, and my dollars are just as good as in the author's wallet. SHIVER by Maggie Stiefvater and UNEARTHLY by Cynthia Hand will forever and ever be two of my favorites that fall under these categories.

Heart-wrenching

This is a tricky one. I love a good emotional read, but I don't like to be sad. When I want my heart torn out of my chest, I mean that I want to be so invested in the characters that I can feel what they're feeling. I want to be spent by the time I close the book, because I laughed and cried and everything in between, and all the feels gave me whiplash in the best possible way. (Hello, BEHIND THE SCENES by Dahlia Adler, HALLOWED by Cynthia Hand, and EVERNEATH by Brodi Ashton, I'm looking at you.)

Mind-bending

Another double-edged sword. I love a book that keeps me wondering. That makes me shoot out of my seat halfway through and yell, "WTF IS HAPPENING?" because the plot is just that twisted. But - I don't do well with ambiguous endings. Not because they aren't a kickass way to end a book, because anything that can literally keep me awake at night is a job well done. But if things aren't wrapped up in a nice, neat little package, that's when my imagination starts filling in gaps. Repeatedly. Until *I'm* almost insane. And I might also email you begging to know what really happened.

(PSA - I did this to Andrea Hannah after I read her sub draft of OF SCARS AND STARDUST, but you're not allowed to. You are, however, allowed to drop everything and pre-order it here, because you're missing out if you don't.)

Riveting

If a book promises to keep me on the edge of my seat to the point where I will literally behead anyone who dares interrupt while I'm reading? SOLD. (Hi, FAR FROM YOU by Tess Sharpe, hi.)

A few others that weaken my willpower? Forbidden, temptation, first love, thrilling, mystery. Oh yeah. The list goes on.

So tell us, Misfiteers - what are the "buy me" buzzwords that land books in *your* TBR pile?

A good checklist! I tend to go for inspiring, sweet, and first...anything. :)
Also, A Mad, Wicked Folly was so freaking good! (And that comes from a person who tends to keep away from historical fiction.)

Obviously I'm a little biased about one of those titles, but SUCH GOOD CHOICES for the others - I'm totally drawn to the same things, though I reallllly have to be in the mood for heart-wrenching. If I hear something's really funny, that's definitely a HUGE thing for me.
