If you'll recall, we've changed up our format a little bit for these posts. Because we've all gotten so used to getting our thoughts down in 140 characters, we're taking the discussion to Twitter! Every Monday, we'll be talking about our Pep Rally question on Twitter and we'd love you to join in. Just keep an eye out for the #MisfitPepRally hashtag!
Happy Monday, Misfiteers!
So, recently, I've had a pretty big (and actually pretty fortunate, if you think about the other possibilities) problem in terms of writing. After several months of writer's block, something changed and instead of not wanting to or not knowing what to write, I suddenly had TOO MANY things I wanted to write. It got to the point where I spent several hours for many long days switching back and forth between different projects or staring at the ceiling for who knows how long, stupefied by all the different possibilities but not knowing which direction to take. Perhaps because I was afraid of committing to one project after seeing so many of them shelved or rejected for reasons beyond my control (i.e: the genre being "too flooded" with similar projects or what have you), I really had difficulty trying to choose which one I should fully commit my time.
Every single one of them had their pros and cons, and it's only when I really honed in on this one aspect that I knew which project I should work on--the characters. Although many of my ideas had cool ideas that involved the plot, only one project had characters that really spoke to me, whose stories demanded to be told. Although it's still unclear how well this book will go, I really could not abandon these characters and their experiences, thoughts, and emotions. It's because of these characters that I snapped out of my daze so I could write and work toward writing more books instead of feeling overwhelmed by the great many possibilities.
How about you, MIsfiteers? Have you had a similar situation where the characters influenced you to choose a particular writing project? How else have your characters helped you? What are some of the favorite characters you've written? Tweet it to @YAMisfits with #MisfitPepRally!
