Confession #1: I didn't used to write WIP playlists. I listened to music while writing, sure, but the whole playlist thing...I didn't start doing it until we started YA Misfits and decided to make Band Geek Thursday a feature. As such, when it came my turn to post, I went with newer manuscripts, so I could use playlists that were created during the writing process itself.
But hey, Behind the Scenes came out this week, so, seems like today's a pretty good time :)
Confession #2: The only bands that really get shoutouts in BtS are classic rock, because Ally's a huge fan. (That was done in tribute to a certain friend of mine.) I, however, don't get inspired to write by the Beatles, so this is definitely more of a Dahlia playlist than an Ally playlist.
Phew! Glad I got that all off my chest! Now, let's get on with it!
First, a quick recap of the book:
Spending the extra time with Van turns out to be fun, and getting to know her sexy co-star Liam is an added bonus. But when the actors’ publicist arranges for Van and Liam to “date” for the tabloids just after he and Ally share their first kiss, Ally will have to decide exactly what role she's capable of playing in their world of make believe. If she can't play by Hollywood's rules, she may lose her best friend, her dream future, and her first shot at love.
"Disenchanted Lullaby" by Foo Fighters - The name of the song alone is just a perfect fit for MC Ally and her whole view of the Hollywood scene, as its been colored by watching her Korean-American best friend, Vanessa, struggle in the industry, largely due to her race
"Hollywood" by After Midnight Project - Misfit Maggie is actually the one that rec'd this band to me, and this song was such a no-brainer for this book:
"Sometimes I wish I was never born in Hollywood
I get so scared
I don't know how to walk; I'm always running unprepared"
"La Belle et Le Bad Boy" by MC Solaar - Okay, so Liam's not a bad boy, per se, but every time I hear this song, I think of the scene where Ally first tutors Liam in French <3
"Funny Little Feeling" by Rock n Roll Soldiers - Ally and Liam are definitely a little bit of a slower build up to realizing they're crushing on each other hard, so I love "I got a funny little feeling/my arms are shakin' like a lightning rod" because it reminds of them kinda realizing it little by little until the night they realize it hardcore.
"Kiss Your Photograph" by A Thousand Horses - Kind of a duh :)
"My Life Would Suck Without You" by Kelly Clarkson - There's a line Liam says to Ally in Behind the Scenes that kinda sums them up nicely to me, and that's "You make my day not suck, and that's no small thing." So, this song is the closest thing!
"Hollywood Bitch" by Stone Temple Pilots - There are one or two secondary characters in the book this might be a little tribute to. Hey - can't love all of the people all of the time!
"In Your Room" by Halestorm - The funny thing is that I love Halestorm because of all their really fun, vicious rock stuff, some of which is perfect on the playlist for my NA, Last Will and Testament. But they have this one super gentle song that's exactly, exactly right for a scene in the book which - surprise, surprise - takes place in Ally's room the first time Liam comes to her house.
"Paparazzi" by Lady Gaga and "Circus" by Britney Spears - Songs that get super relevant for Ally, Vanessa, and Liam...
"Factory Girl" by the Pretty Reckless - This is probably the band I was listening to the most when writing Behind the Scenes, and this is exactly the song I imagine playing in the background when Ally, Liam, and Vanessa roll into Josh's party.
"The Rake's Song" by the Decemberists - Totally hyperbolic, of course, but this is my Josh song, because he is just terrible <3
"Malibu" by Hole - Another of my favorite bands you'll unsurprisingly find on a lot of my playlists. Between Josh and Corrinne's houses being set in Malibu and the lyrics like
"Crash and burn/all the stars explode tonight
how'd you get so desperate/how'd you stay alive?"
this is just the perfect BtS song on so many levels.
"Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" by P!nk - I love P!nk so much, and like Halestorm, she was a huge inspiration for Last Will and Testament, but this song is perfect for a certain interaction that happens between a certain two people at a certain prom afterparty...
"Stupid Girl" by Garbage - Man, I forgot how much awesome lady rock is on this playlist! Another of my favorite bands, another awesome song. If Ally had my taste in music, this is the song she'd be blasting after her conversation with Josh in the car.
"Los Angeles, I'm Yours" by The Decemberists and "California Love" by 2Pac, et al. - Hopefully, if you've read the books, these are pretty self-explanatory :)
