Interview with a Misfit: Marieke

Over here on the YAMF blog, we have a feature on the last Friday of the month: Interview With A Misfit. Wherein we subject ourself by being interviewed by a robot, because robot are not at all scary and likely to overthrow the human race at some point.

So, Misfit Bot! Hello! Thanks for having me!

Hi, Misfit Marieke! Tell us about you and what you're working on!
Hi Misfit bot! I'm currently working on #SpyFantasy, a YA fantasy about, well, spies. I love spies, spies are awesome. But it's also about treason and war and friendship and torture and finding out what's left of you when everything you've believed in and everything you were is taken away from you.

I write happy stories, you see.

Your YAMisfits nickname is The Foreign Exchange Student. What'd you do to earn that one?
Um, be Dutch?

How do you find your pep on a Monday, or any other day when writing is tough?
I love to go out for a walk and clear my mind. There's nothing that some fresh air and fresh perspective can't fix, at least when it comes to writing. Alternatively, I'll snuggle up with one of my favorite books (or a particularly brilliant beta read) and lose myself in the beauty of words.

What's your favorite writing tip?
Find your own path. I don't think there's any piece of advice that holds true for everyone, so in most cases it's about what works for you. But even so: keep writing. Be respectful. Stay informed. And above all, dream big.

What bands do you go geeky for, both when writing or just relaxing?
Oh that depends so much on the mood I'm in! I listen to music from all over, from musicals to metal, and from folk to film scores. Also, anything with good lyrics. You can always seduce me with gorgeous words.

What's your ideal kind of casual Friday?
PJs, a nice drink, and a book to write. For all that writing is hard and painful and an uphill battle sometimes, there's really nothing more I love to do.

Who's your dream interview subject for YAMisfits?
I'd love to interview Melina Marchetta. With her Lumatere Chronicles, she wrote one of my favorite fantasy series *ever* and everything about her writing, from her gorgeous prose to her lifelike characters, resonates with me strongly. In fact, let's skip the interviewing--I just want to hang out and have drinks one night ;)

What are some of the best books you've read recently, and which ones are you looking forward to?
Ooh, let's see. I recently got my hands on an ARC of Tess Sharpe's FAR FROM YOU, which I'd been dying to read! And it was every bit as good as I hoped it would be. I started reading it on the train in London, read it all the way through France and Belgium, and cried my eyes out (in public!) for the last fifty pages or so. Trust me, you'll want to read this as soon as it comes out!

I've also loved BEAUTIFUL MUSIC FOR UGLY CHILDREN, Kristin Cronn-Mills's second book (her debut--THE SKY ALWAYS HEARS ME AND THE HILLS DON'T MIND--is quite fantastic too!). BMFUC is a recent Stonewall Award winning book and it couldn't be more deserving.

As for books I'm looking forward to... I am eagerly awaiting Jennifer Nielsen's THE SHADOW THRONE, the third book in her Ascendance trilogy that started with the fantastic THE FALSE PRINCE. You wouldn't be able to tell by my previous suggestions, but I've been reading all the fantasy I could find (which is what I usually do in winter) and I've been gobbling up the first two books in this series!

On that note, E.K. Johnston's THE STORY OF OWEN sounds spectacular. Kate's writing is just beautiful and DRAGONS.

And finally (yet even more Fourteenery books *grabby hands*), I've been wanting to get my hands on Julie Murphy's SIDE EFFECTS MAY VARY since it was only an entry in a contest and I can't wait for it to *finally* be here!

I could talk about books for quite some time longer, but Misfit bot will glare at me, and frankly, robots are scary. So, thank you so much, Misfit bot, for having me! And if anyone has a question for me, leave it in the comments! :)

Lovely interview! I love music with amazing lyrics above all as well. :D

I remember Other Julie! We were both judges in a Cupid contest once. Her book looks awesome.
