Interview with Misfit: Erica M. Chapman

Happy Catching Fire Day, Misfiteers!

We over here at the YA Misfits are starting a new feature for the last Friday of every month: Interview With A Misfit. Sounds fun, eh?

So! The way this works is that we have a set of standard questions that we can answer (kind of like having a YA Misfit Bot to interview us), OR we'll have another misfit interview us. BUT, since most of the misfits are all hunkered down and NaNoing, weird YA Misfit Bot it is ;o)

Okay, here we go!

Hi, Misfit Erica! Tell us about you and what you're working on!

Well, Misfit bot, I'm writing a seriously fun project that isn't even dark. I KNOW. I'm as surprised as anyone that it's not dark. It's about dance and camp and romance! I love it. I'm also planning on revising my YA Thriller HOUSE OF LIES through the month of December. I'm excited about this one too. It's about the dark side of religion and killers (of course, since it's me), and small town issues. Right now, I'm eagerly trying to finish NaNo I'm almost to 40K! So my life is basically WORDS... DAY JOB.... WORDS.... EAT.... WATCH Ravenswood, Vampire Diaries, The Carrie Diaries... WORDS... DAY JOB... visit with hubs... WORDS.

Your YAMisfits nickname is The Rocker. What'd you do to earn that one?

I've loved rock music for as long as I could sing. I was/am a huge Pearl Jam fan and a total grunge in high school. I had the Doc Martins, flannel, the whole works. In between show choir I would totally rock out with my friends too. Fun times.

How do you find your pep on a Monday, or any other day when writing is tough?

Wait. You can be peppy on a Monday? HA. I feel about how Katniss does down there on Mondays. Let's see. I like Chai Tea, but what almost always works for me is a good song on repeat. I have this whole Emo playlist that has like 10 songs on it. They're all depressing and full of minor notes. Perfect for writing to!

What's your favorite writing tip?

"You can't revise a blank page. Give yourself permission to write crappy in a first draft." Those are the ones I hear all the time that most writers know, but they are really good things to remember.

For my advice... Don't write to please someone else. It's easy to get caught up in trends and what's hot, but publishing is like 3 years ahead of trends, as we well know, so it's even more important to write what you're passionate about. Think about what you like to read and write that. Keep writing no matter what. One of the best things to get you through the stumbling blocks in any stage is looking forward to the next story ;o)

What bands do you go geeky for, both when writing or just relaxing?
Oh man, SO many. Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Paramore, The Fray, Evanescence, The Neighbourhood, The Civil Wars, Imagine Dragons, Florence + The Machine, Young The Giant. I could name bands all day!

What's your ideal kind of casual Friday?
Watching a movie with my hubs and then writing all night or reading a good book. Or eating Thai with my sister. That's always fun ;o) However, this particular Friday I'm going to see Catching Fire!! So it varies. My ideal is staying home though. I've kind of turned into a homebody.

Who's your dream interview subject for YAMisfits?
I would love to pick the brain of Rainbow Rowell. I loved FANGIRL.

What are some of the best books you've read recently, and which ones are you looking forward to?

Besides FANGIRL, I fell in LOVE with lovely and sweet author Sara B. Larson's DEFY. SO good. Also, WILD CARDS by Simone Elkeles was an excellent read. I love my football!!

Besides my fellow Misfits' books, I'm eagerly looking forward to the last book in Cassie Clare's The Mortal Instruments series, CRASH INTO YOU by Katie McGeary, and RUINED by Jus Accardo!

Me: Thank you, Misfit bot! It was a pleasure.

Misfit Bot: Thank YOU, it was a pleasure for me too.

Me: Is this as weird as it looks?

Misfit Bot: Yes, yes it is ;o)

Me: Hey, that's my smiley!

Misfit Bot: No, it's mine. Mua ha ha ha ha ;o)

Me: Don't make me disconnect you HAL Jr. (bonus points for getting this reference)

Misfit Bot: Uhhh, was that Dave Grohl over there? *escapes*

Have a great Catching Fire Day, Misfiteers!!

Have a question for Erica? Leave it in the comments!
