Casual Friday: Interview with Blogger and Author Hafsah Laziaf

Happy Friday, Misfiteers!

Today, we're happy to welcome Blogger, Designer, and now Author, Hafsah Laziaf of IceyBooks and IceyDesigns to the YA Misfits! Hafsah's YA debut UNBREATHABLE will be available October 29.

Three days ago, Earth was a rumor, and Lissa was human.

One hundred and fifty years ago, Earth was destroyed, and the remaining humans fled to the dusty red planet of Jutaire, where the only oxygen is manufactured, food is scarce, and death strikes often.

When Lissa's father discovers Earth still exists, she accidentally breathes the toxic air of Jutaire and in one breath, she discovers she isn't quite human.

Her father hangs for his discovery, and Lissa knows the Chancellors will come for her, for she saw the Earth that night too. With nothing to lose, she sets out to expose the truth. It isn't long before she meets Julian, a beautiful boy who can breathe the toxic air like she can - and shows her that the Jute, the original inhabitants of the planet, are more tangled in their lives than she knows.

As mankind races to extinction, Lissa finds out they aren't the only ones in need of Earth, and that the Chancellors are only pawns in a greater game - one where the Jute control everything. Now, Lissa has everything to lose. Earth. Love. The redemption of the human race. And more than anything, her life.

Because the Jute plan to leave Jutaire for Earth, but to get there, they need her. And they'll stop at nothing until Lissa is in their clutches, even if they kill every human in the process.

The race for Earth has begun.

Thanks for joining us on the YA Misfits today, Hafsah! Now, most of us first knew you from your blog, IceyBooks.com. What got you started reviewing books?
My library! My library had a blog where teens could submit reviews to earn a free book. Those reviews make me cringe now ;)

Still, that's so cool! And now you have one coming out, yourself. UNBREATHABLE releases October 29. What made you start writing?
Cliche, but a dream. It was weirdly fascinating, and became my first manuscript... that also makes me cringe.

UNBREATHABLE is my fourth completed manuscript.

Are you nervous? Excited? Dying?
I'm excited, nervous, AND dying. It's very scary, sharing your work with so many people. But I absolutely love the support and enthusiasm from my followers - though it makes me nervous that they won't like it!

Hahaha! Yeah, it's a little scary, isn't it? But the support is amazing. So tell us a bit about the story. Where did you the idea for it?
I love this question, because I never wanted to write a novel set in space.

Random House was asking readers on Twitter to tweet their favorite first lines at the same time when I was finishing up another scifi manuscript.

Because of that, I was trying to think up a better first line than the one I had, when another thought struck. In how many books are characters searching for Earth? Most space novels feature characters trying to get away from Earth.

Fast forward to today, we have... UNBREATHABLE!

On a side note, the first line has since changed.

I have to ask. Pantser, or Plotter?
Panster. I tried plotting once, and I couldn't write for weeks.

I know what you mean! I'm kind of the same way. Ok, quick, give me five fun things about UNBREATHABLE. Ready, go!
1. It's more romance than action.
2. Has a not-what-you-think sort-of love triangle.
3. Will have a sequel and hopefully a prequel.
4. Was originally narrated by a male MC for the first three chapters before I realized the voice didn't fit.
5. Has characters partly inspired by one from Cinder and another from Shadow & Bone.

How exciting! Now I really want to read. Where is your favorite place to write?
In my room, at night, in the dark, on my phone. Odd, I know. But it really helps me visualize.

Interesting. I know I have a little snippet of another project of yours, one I’m really excited about. For everyone else, though, what other projects do you have in the works?
You're referring to the fantasy I am SO EXCITED to share. I won't say much, but it's dual POV set in Arabia - both of which could change.

But that's on the back burner right now, what with UNBREATHABLE releasing soon. Next up? Its sequel.

I can't wait! Ok, favorite line from UNBREATHABLE.
Oh, I can't choose! Here's one:
“Sometimes,” he says softly, his fingers trailing along the wing, “you only see the beauty of something once it’s broken.”

Ok, a few fun, quick questions:

Favorite Book Crush: Shadow & Bone

Character you most wish you could be: I'll be who I am, thankyouverymuch

Book you can’t live without: ...I don't really have one I can't live without.

Favorite writing/designing snack: I am a bad eater. But I usually run for some chocolate almond milk when I need a quick energy boost!

Thanks for having me!

Of course! Best of luck with your release, Hafsah, and thanks for joining us!

Girl. 20. Sister. YA writer. Reviewer. Book Blogger. Blog Designer. Maybe more than that.

Hafsah began IceyBooks in late 2010 after many months of reviewing for her local library’s teen blog. What started as just reviews has now expanded to interviews, giveaways, cover reveals, and blogging tips.

Aside from blogging, Hafsah is also an author. Her debut YA science fiction novel, UNBREATHABLE, which takes place on a planet much like Mars, releases on October 29th, 2013.

In addition to being an author, Hafsah has been designing blogs and websites since the age of thirteen. In late 2011, she opened IceyDesigns and began professionally designing blogs, websites, print work and providing social media/marketing solutions to clients – both authors and bloggers alike.
