Band Geek Thursday: Author Sharon Biggs Waller's Soundtrack for A MAD, WICKED FOLLY!

Hey all!

You might remember a couple weeks ago, we interviewed author Sharon Biggs Waller about her upcoming YA historical, A MAD, WICKED FOLLY. We even gave away an ARC, and the response was so fantastic, we thought you might like to learn a little more about the story - namely Sharon's playlist!

We're happy to have Sharon back to tell us all about the music that goes along with Vicky's story. Be sure to bookmark this post for when you're reading the novel in January! Take it away, Sharon!

I adore creating soundtracks when I’m writing because 1. I love music. And 2. Songs launch me into the story world. A song with the right lyrics and melody helps me understand what my character might be feeling in the situation I’ve thrown her into.
For Vicky, Florence + The Machine’s song Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up) was almost written for her.  The opening lyrics describe the issues in her life so well: “The looking glass so shiny and new, how quickly the glamour fades.  I start spinning, slipping out of time.  Was that the wrong pill to take?”
Incidentally, Rabbit Heart’s video looks like a Pre-Raphaelite painting come to life.  (The Pre-Raphaelites are Vicky’s favorite painters.)
And then there is Tori Amos with Silent All These Years, a song about a young woman desperately seeking her own voice. Amos’ A Sorta Fairytale makes me think about how Vicky regards her fiancé.
Vienna Teng’s Grandmother Song is an anthem for Lucy Hawkins and the other suffragettes. And the instrumentals like Time and Adagio are perfect for Vicky’s art sessions. I included White Blank Page by Mumford & Sons for Vicky’s muse model, Will.
My Grooveshark playlist for A MAD, WICKED FOLLY (below) follows the story arc from the first chapter song Shake it Out (another Florence song) to the very last chapter with the atmospheric Old Skin by Ólafur Arnalds.  I’d love to hear your thoughts!

I listened to this entire playlist while I did homework and I LOVE it. Even more excited for the book now (if that's even possible).

I just listened to an audio excerpt of A MAD, WICKED FOLLY and really enjoyed, so I decided to see if there was a playlist and came across this post. I always like when there is a mixture of songs I know and other I'm hearing for the first time. Where I Stood & Old Skin are my favourites of the songs I've never heard before. Look forward to reading this book even more now.
