Interview with a Misfit: Jamie Grey

Happy Friday, Misfiteers, Jamie here!

We over here at the YA Misfits are starting a new feature for the last Friday of every month: Interview With A Misfit. The way this works is that we have a set of standard questions that we can answer (kind of like having a YA Misfit Bot to interview us), OR we'll have another misfit interview us.

Today I’m just going to go with the Misfit Bot, because you know I love my robots!

OK, here we go!

Hi, Misfit Jamie! Tell us about you and what you're working on!

I write YA and NA in almost every genre, though lately my obsession has been Science Fiction. My first book, Ultraviolet Catastrophe just came out on Tuesday!

I’m also finishing up a New Adult Science Fiction Romance (Space Opera) called The Star Thief.  Renna Carrizal is the most wanted thief in the galaxy, but when she’s blackmailed into protecting humanity from a galactic attack, she may be forced to walk the straight and narrow. Especially if the handsome but arrogant Captain Finn has his way. Problem is, she wouldn’t mind him having his way with her.

I’m planning this to be a trilogy and I’m already starting on book 2. It’s been so much fun to write!

Your YAMisfits nickname is The Hippie Chick. What'd you do to earn that one?

Er. Yeah. See I tend to be interested in a ton of different things, and while I’m learning, I get obsessed. So while I was in high school, I was really interested in anything new age. I bought myself a set of tarot cards, a few books, and taught myself how to read. My friends all loved it because I practiced on them. And of course the nickname stuck. I’m not so interested in that sort of thing now, but I can still tell you what your star sign means and how to pick out the best crystal ball.

How do you find your pep on a Monday, or any other day when writing is tough?

Mondays kill me. So I tend to use them for administrative tasks, at least until I’ve had enough coffee to function as a human. When writing is tough, I know it’s usually for one of two reasons.
1. I’m burned out, in which case a break is in order
2. I’m just being lazy, so I turn on Spotify, fire up Write or Die, and force myself to knock out a few hundred words. Something is better than nothing!

What's your favorite writing tip?

Love what you’re writing. Life is too short to spend that much time on something that doesn’t make you happy.

What bands do you go geeky for, both when writing or just relaxing?

Imagine Dragons, The Beatles, Daft Punk, Adele. I have eclectic taste in music, it just depends on the day.

What's your ideal kind of casual Friday?

Fridays are awesome in general, but my ideal Friday is a day off from the day job. A day I can spend entirely writing in my pjs, napping, and just generally relaxing.

Who's your dream interview subject for YAMisfits?

Dream interview subject, huh? Well, if this is a dream, then I’m going to go with Neil Gaiman. I love his writing – spare and beautiful and so evocative. And he’s just generally a cool guy with an amazing perspective on life.

What are some of the best books you've read recently, and which ones are you looking forward to?

Oh my. Um. Well, I’ve kind of been in a reading rut. When that happens, I usually go back to reading Regency romances to cleanse my palate. But I did just finish Throne of Glass by Sarah Mass, and it was amazing! I can’t wait to start Crown of Midnight.

As for what I’m looking forward to? TWO by our own Leigh Ann Kopans is out on October 8th. It’s the sequel to ONE and it’s AMAZING! I also can’t wait to read BETWEEN, by Misfit Megan, which is coming in 2014. I’m also looking forward to reading FANGIRL by Rainbow Rowell.

Okay, I think that’s enough quality time with the Misfit Interview bot! Thanks for spending a little bit of your Friday with me, Misfiteers!

Have a question for Jamie? Leave it in the comments!
