Band Geek Thursday: Guest STAR Jessica Spotswood!

Happy Band Geek Thursday, Misfiteers! We have a very special treat for you today, in the form of a guest post by the one and only Jessica Spotswood, author of the Cahill Witch Chronicles series! If you haven't already read the magnificent BORN WICKED, get on that, because the second book in the series, STAR CURSED, just released this past Tuesday!!!

Not only is she here to give us a sneak peek into book 3(!!!) of the series, but she's also super generously giving away the signed UK version of BORN WICKED! So check out her Band Geek Thursday playlist, and then read on for more about STAR CURSED and for a chance to win!

When Dahlia asked me to do a Band Geek Thursday post for the Misfits, I was super-excited. But I am so firmly entrenched in Cahill Book 3 that I couldn't even remember what would be on my soundtrack for STAR CURSED! So I'm giving you a little preview of the songs that I've been listening to over and over (and over and over) while I finish the Cahill Witch Chronicles. I'll share the lyrics that are particularly resonant, and give you a tiny (no spoilers!) hint about what they relate to.

1. "Just Give Me A Reason" - Pink
Just give me a reason
Just a little bit's enough
Just a second we're not broken just bent
And we can learn to love again
It's in the stars
It's been written in the scars on our hearts

Every time I hear this song (which is A LOT because it plays on the radio constantly), I think of Cate and Finn and her desperation to fix things between them.
2. "Trout Heart Replica" - Amanda Palmer & the Grand Theft Orchestra
And killing things is not so hard
It's hurting that's the hardest part
And when the wizard gets to me
I'm asking for a smaller heart

And I got you
I thought that I caught you
Now I'll ruin it all
Feeling helpless, acting selfish
Being human and all

This song reminds me of Maura. She does so many reckless, impulsive things - things that hurt other people - but her flaw isn't heartlessness, as much as she tries. If anything, she cares too much, wants too much.

3. "The Killing Type" - Amanda Palmer & the Grand Theft Orchestra
I'm not the killing type
I'm not I'm not
I'm not the killing type I'm not

But I would kill to make you feel
I'd kill to move your face an inch

This is what I think of as Cate's theme song for CB3. She wants so badly to believe that the prophecy of the three sisters won't come true, and that she would never hurt Maura or Tess.
4. "When I'm Gone" - Anna Kendrick
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
You're gonna miss me by my hair
You're gonna miss me everywhere, oh
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone

This song reminds me of Maura - she's forever flouncing out of rooms saying she's done with her sisters, that she doesn't need them, that she's fine on her own - but she never means it.

5. "Shake It Out" - Florence + the Machine
I am done with my graceless heart
So tonight I'm gonna cut it out and then restart

And I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't
So here's to drinks in the dark at the end of my road
And I'm ready to suffer and I'm ready to hope
It's a shot in the dark and right at my throat
Cause looking for heaven, found the devil in me

I think all 3 Cahill sisters try not to feel, not to care so deeply about things, in CB3. It doesn't work.

6. "What the Water Gave Me" - Florence
'Cause they took your loved ones
But returned them in exchange for you
But would you have it any other way?
Would you have it any other way?
You couldn't have it any other way
A song for Cate, who would sacrifice herself in a heartbeat for her sisters
7. "To Whomever It May Concern" - The Civil Wars
Why are you so far from me?
In my arms is where you are meant to be
How long will you make me wait?
I don't know how much more I can take
I missed you but I haven't met you
Oh but I want to
How I do
A Cate and Finn song. Anything I can say would be spoilery!

8. "Birds of a Feather" - The Civil Wars
She's the sea I'm sinkin' in
He's the ink under my skin
Sometimes I can't tell where I am
Where I leave off and he begins
A song for the swoony kissing scene midway through CB3. Finn always smells of tea and ink.

9. "Love Love Love" - Of Monsters & Men
Well, maybe I'm a crook for stealing your heart away
Yeah, maybe I'm a crook for not caring for it
Yeah, maybe I'm a bad, bad, bad, bad person
Well, baby, I know.
A Maura and Elena song. Who's breaking whose heart? I'd say by this point they're about even. Writing the dynamics between them is one of my favorite things in CB3.

Gah, how is it not 2014 yet???? Thankfully, we've got the brand-new STAR CURSED to tide us over! Check out this amazing summary of book #2 of the Cahill Witch Chronicles, and see where to else to find Jess online so you can get to know this amazing author and lovely Friend of Misfits!
With the Brotherhood persecuting witches like never before, a divided Sisterhood desperately needs Cate to come into her Prophesied powers. And after Cate's friend Sachi is arrested for using magic, a war-thirsty Sister offers to help her find answers—if Cate is willing to endanger everyone she loves.

Cate doesn't want to be a weapon, and she doesn't want to involve her friends and Finn in the Sisterhood's schemes. But when Maura and Tess join the Sisterhood, Maura makes it clear that she'll do whatever it takes to lead the witches to victory. Even if it means sacrifices. Even if it means overthrowing Cate. Even if it means all-out war.

In the highly anticipated sequel to BORN WICKED, the Cahill Witch Chronicles continue Cate, Maura and Tess's quest to find love, protect family, and explore their magic against all odds in an alternate history of New England.
