Band Geek Thursday: Kat Ellis' Playlist for BLACKFIN SKY

Happy Band Geek Thursday, Misfiteers! Today we've got a very special treat in the form of a guest playlist by Friend of Misfits Kat Ellis! For those who don't know Kat, she is A) a fantastic blogger, whose posts you can read here, B) an awesome writer of YA sci-fi and fantasy, repped by the lovely Molly Ker Hawn, C) gorgeously accented, what with her being Welsh and all, and D) so wonderful you should get to know her immediately.

Kat was fab enough to share one of her playlists with us, so come check it out!

Thanks to the YA Misfits for inviting me to invade their blog for this Band Geek Thursday! I thought I'd share this playlist with you guys to go with my latest WIP, which is called BLACKFIN SKY. To give a little context, here's what it's about...

When Sky falls from Blackfin Pier and drowns on her sixteenth birthday, the whole town goes into mourning - until she shows up three months later like nothing happened.

Unravelling the mystery of those missing months takes Sky to the burned-out circus in the woods, where whispers of murder and kidnapping point toward the Blood House where Sky grew up. But Sky’s not the only one digging up the past – the old mime from the circus knows what happened to her, and he has more than one reason for keeping quiet about it.

Now on to the songs!

Crawled Out of the Sea (Interlude) by Laura Marling - I have to give a shout-out to Awesome Agent Molly Ker Hawn for suggesting the album this song comes from as the perfect accompaniment to BLACKFIN SKY, because it definitely is. This song in particular has the creepy, haunting, slightly ridiculous vibe that carries through the MS, and I fell in insta-love with her voice and creepy lyrics.

Lonely Boy by The Black Keys - When I picture the opening scene to this MS, this is the song playing in my head. Picture a bit of running, a bit of weird, and me bopping my head along with it.

Dirge by Death in Vegas - This song epitomises the level of sheer weirdness in this MS for me. It's like Twin Peaks on some kind of hallucinogenic; the face behind the mirror, the hand reaching out of the dark lake to grab your ankle…

Disparate Youth by Santigold - Where some of the tracks on this list are in it for the vibe, this one is all about characters. For me it sums up the close relationship the MC, Sky, has with her best friends. It's their weird little clique in a weird little town, brought together by their differentness. I love it.

Siren Song by Bat For Lashes - Another character song, but this one is about Sky's relationship with her mother. Tricksy.

Pork and Beans by Weezer - This one is all about a character called Sean. In one scene, he's listening to his MP3 player, and although it's not mentioned in the MS, this is the song he's listening to. It suits his character so perfectly, as well - he's the cardigan-wearing friend-turned-LI, the normal one in a town of odd people, and 100% comfortable in his skin.

Without You Here by Finch - One of my all-time-favourite songs by my all-time-favourite band (who I just happened to see live last week, so be jealous). This is all about loss and finding strength and love and all good, powerful things.

Ain't Nobody (Breakage Remix) by Clare Maguire - This song is so creepily awesome, and fits with the freaky, circusy parts of the MS.

The Suburbs (Continued) by Arcade Fire - A dreamy interlude of a song, this is tied to a scene near the end of the MS where the MC is driving up into the Lychgate Mountains, the town of Blackfin falling away behind her.

Comeback Kid by Sleigh Bells - This is the song I imagine as the 'end credits' track. It's punchy and weird and I'm sure you can figure out how the title ties to the plot!

...And that's it! I really hope you like my playlist.

Kat, this is a wonderfully atmospheric playlist. I'm lucky enough to have read Blackfin Sky and this list is just perfect for it. Also FINCH! Love the Weezer too.

"In one scene, he's listening to his MP3 player, and although it's not mentioned in the MS, this is the song he's listening to." I LOVE this, the way you say it so matter of factly like, yeah, duh, it's this thing happening offscreen. Means you really think of your characters as living, breathing things <3 (Also, I love Weezer so freaking much.)
