Monday Pep Rally: Book BFFs

Monday Pep Rally is a weekly feature where the Misfits post a question for you, the reader, to answer. You can answer on your own blog and link in the comments, or just answer here!

I'm in the middle of revisions for Between right now, but I've been spending a lot of time thinking about Room For Two, my WIP that so far pretty much only exists in my head. It's a YA romance, and I've been dreaming about my two main characters, Cooper and Laurel, for about a year now.

My plan for the story itself has shifted in that time, and the more I think about it, the more I realize the major role that Cooper's and Laurel's best friends, (Meredith and Auggie) will play in the book. They're going to have to be great, likable, standout supporting characters for this book to work.

This has made me think a lot about well-written BFFs in young adult books that I've read lately. It's so easy to fall in love with the main character, right? You spend a lot of time with the main character and many times the story is told from that character's voice. So for a supporting character to really make a difference, s/he needs something special for the reader to connect with.

One of my absolute favorites, so much that I kind of wish there was a spin-off book about him, is Hassan Harbish from John Green's An Abundance of Katherines. Hassan is a muslim teenager, and he's lazy, hilarious, and obsessed with Judge Judy.

I. Love. Him.

What about you guys? Who are some of your favorite supporting characters, and what made them stand out to you?

Uh... can we really talk about Book BFFs without talking about Ron and Hermione? Basically the two best best friends a book character ever had, right? And all the more real for their bickering over the years. They complement Harry, they provide the skills and the emotions that he doesn't have, giving the reader a more full experience.

I could talk about Harry Potter for a long, long time. So I'll just leave it at that ;)

I know it's not a book, but I particularly love the AVATAR LAST AIRBENDER, tv series. (not the movie). I think Ang has the bestest buddies ever in Katara, Sokka, Toph, Appa, and Momo. It's so perfect it sets me to giggles just thinking about them.
For books? I just finished Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor. I so love the relationship between Karu and Zuzana. So fun and a truly believable duo.

^I agree with the Harry Potter and Last Airbender mentions!

As for me...hm. My favorite character in Libba Bray's GEMMA DOYLE TRILOGY was Ann Bradshaw, because she was the most flawed. Made her more interesting. There's also Patrick from PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER (although part of my attachment to him might be because of Ezra Miller's incredible performance in the movie). He's just so lighthearted and sure of himself, but still struggling with his own demons. Oh, does Will from HIS DARK MATERIALS count? He and Lyra were both sort of the main characters, but I couldn't decide who I liked better. Both very strong, brave, and clever.
