Pitch Wars Entry #20 - ONCE THE DARKNESS COMES (Adult Post-Apocalyptic Horror)

NAME: Annie Neugebauer
MENTOR: Nazarea Andrews
GENRE: Adult Horror (post-apocalyptic, upmarket)
WORD COUNT: 116,000

PITCH: A plague of blindness is sweeping the world, turning people into Sleepers. Schizophrenic Adrian Black fears blindness more than death; sight is her only proof that the voices she hears aren’t real. Pursued by relentless Sleepers, Adrian fights to reach the only place rumored to have withstood the darkness: The City That Never Sleeps.

FIRST 250:
Against all odds, I am falling asleep. This word, falling, doesn’t mean what it used to. Falling asleep, falling apart, even falling in love… they’ve all been tainted.

Sleep is difficult to come by now. For one thing, there’s the fear. Insidious and constant, the threat of The Phenomenon has turned what’s left of humanity into willful insomniacs. Then there’s the side effects of being off my meds; sleep has been hard-fought since I ran out of my antipsychotics three weeks ago.

But somehow, in the midst of the clusterfuck that’s become my life, I’ve fallen into the most beautiful, magical thing that’s ever happened to me – what I’m lying in the middle of: a male body on each side of me, the steady breathing of the guys.

And it’s the best kind of love. The kind that’s strong and warm and hard. The kind that wears me out before bed so I can sleep – that makes me feel safe enough to close my eyes.

I do that now, letting the gentle rhythm of the houseboat rock me toward dreams. Colby, at my back, always falls asleep first. Ripley, in front of me, is still and silent, but I suspect he waits for me to drift off every night before he gives in.

After I shut my lids, I realize I haven’t heard Raven yet tonight. I cringe into myself, wishing I hadn’t thought it. Unfailingly, he comes.

His whisper beats the darkness like raven wings.
