Pitch Wars Entry #17 - EDGE OF FOREVER (YA Sci-Fi)

NAME: Melissa Hurst
MENTOR: Kimberly Chase
TITLE: EDGE OF FOREVER
GENRE: YA Sci-Fi
WORD COUNT: 98,000

PITCH:

In 2146, seventeen-year-old Bridger, a Time Bender, learns his dead father planned to prevent the murder of sixteen-year-old Alora. Determined to discover why he'd want to save a "ghost," Bridger illegally shifts to 2013 and races to uncover Alora's connection to his father before he's caught. Because if he can stop Alora's death without altering the time line, maybe he can save his father too.

FIRST 250:

Two months ago, I would've been as excited as the cadets surrounding me. Most of them are peering out the shuttle windows at the decay of Old Denver stretching below us. I can’t blame them. After all, we’re on our first time trip out of this century. And we’re going to record a presidential assassination.

I just wish my dad was still alive so I could tell him about it when I get back. That was our thing. I’d go on a trip and he’d comm me when I returned to my quarters, wanting to know every detail.

This is the first time trip I've taken since he died last month.

“Bridger, are you okay?” My girlfriend Vika asks, placing her hand on my leg.

I fake a smile. “I’m fine.”

She frowns. “You’re such a liar.”

“Why do you say that?”

“Well, let’s see,” she says, tapping her chin. “You haven’t said a thing since we left The Academy, and you look like you want to punch something.” Her gaze drops to my lap, where I’m rubbing my fist.

She’s right. We've only dated for six months, and she can already read me like I’m broadcasting my feelings on a Jumbotron. I've got to get it together before we land. I let go of my fist and will the muscles in my body to relax, starting with my hands, but it doesn't work.
