Band Geek Thursday: Maggie's General Writing Playlist

You've already seen my playlist for my current MS, THE ELITE, but what about when I'm not working on that? What if I'm tired of that playlist, or not working on the scenes that I associate with those songs, or working on a different project that doesn't have its own playlist?

On my general writing playlist, I have a bunch of songs I can write to anytime. They evoke a mood, but not a certain scene.

Writing by maggieh on Grooveshark

1. Exogenesis Symphony 1-3 by Muse. These songs are so wonderfully dramatic and are mostly instrumental, so are great for people who don't like writing to lyrics.

2. Kiss Quick by Matt Nathanson. This one is beautiful and a little sad (and could work really well for certain sexytimes scenes--just saying!).

3. Poison and Wine by The Civil Wars. Talk about beautiful and sad. If you're writing the end of a relationship, this one is for you.

4. Arms by Christina Perri. Finally, a happy song! If Poison and Wine is the end of a relationship, this is the beginning.

5. We Don't Eat by James Vincent McMorrow. This one...I don't even really associate this one with a certain kind of scene. I just love writing to it. Press play. You'll see.

6. Florence and the Machine. All of her music. She's gorgeous and dramatic and angsty and you can find a song to fit any scene.

7. After Midnight Project. They are my go-to angsty writing music. They have three albums I can listen to over and over, and these songs are just a couple good examples.

8. Some Nights by fun. If I'm not feeling motivated to write, blasting Some Nights (and okay, maybe singing along) always makes me feel a little better. It's such a great anthem.

9. Sweet Disposition by Temper Trap. Confession: I dream of someday writing a book that feels like this at the end. The current one isn't nearly happy enough, but I love the song anyway.

Does anyone else have songs they write to that don't fit on a specific playlist?

YES! I have a totally separate writing playlist, though some of the songs do overlap. Ultimately, they're all songs I hope to fit into mss eventually. Last night I listened to Miranda Lambert's "Mama's Broken Heart" about a zillion times while editing.

Oh, yeah. My fantasy had a weird mix, everything from Tool to Journey. My romance--100% Florence and the Machine--LOVE THEM.

I don't know that song, Dahl! I'm going to have to go check it out.

Eliza--isn't Florence great?? I can just put any of her stuff on and be happy.
