Pep Rally Monday: Bad to the Bone

Monday Pep Rally is a weekly feature where the Misfits post a question for you, the reader, to answer. You can answer on your own blog and link in the comments, or just answer here!

Every story needs a villain. And what better time to talk about villains than now, when we're so close to Halloween and the Misfits' Halloween blog visits, all villain-themed (which you should definitely come back to read, nudge nudge wink wink nudge nudge.) Character motivation is all well and good, but unless you have a person or force keeping the main character from achieving their goal, there just won't be as much tension.

Plus, you won't have anyone to completely, utterly hate.

One of my favorite literary villains of all time is Dolores Umbridge, from Harry Potter. That woman is the most vile character I have ever had the pleasure of reading about. She's constantly kicking Harry down and, though she gets her just rewards in the end of Order of the Phoenix, she will forever be the most annoying, hate-worthy villain I know of. And I think I hate her so much because she believes so strongly that what she's doing is right.

So here's my question for you on this wonderful (urgghh) Monday:

Who is your favorite (or most-hated) literary villain, and why? What do you think makes them such a good villain?

I can't think of any.. ALl the villains I hate are from TV shows--The FBI chick from SOA, tops the list.

Although, I did like the guy from Shadow and Bone, but you didn't know he was a real villain until the very end.

Oh, I love me some old-school Austen villains. LOVE them. Mary Crawford and Caroline Bingley - supreme, backhanded-complimenting, conniving bitches of the first degree. They are WONDERFUL.

And even though he's not literary, Magneto. OMG. Just....MAGNETO.

hmm most of mine have already been taken. but I'm going to have to go with Claudius (Hamlet's uncle) because without him, Jeremy Irons wouldn't have gotten the chance to play Scar :)

Oh, and Janine from the Divergent series. I'd totally be an Erudite, and even I cant stand her...

Oh! Dolores is a great one!! Um... Oh man, this is hard. I agree with Rachel, Valentine is a great one. I love the ones that have a goodness beneath the surface somewhere. They're evil, but they have a reason to be. Those are my favorites ;o)

Great post!!
